Chiefland, the self-proclaimed "Gem of the Suwannee Valley" is a city in Levy County, Florida. Several Indian tribes lived around the area; when the Chiefs met, they met in Chiefland because it was in the middle of their tribes, thus creating the name Chiefland, "Land Of The Chiefs". A village of Timucuan Indians was once located south of the present city and at Manatee Springs. This area's economy was traditionally based on agriculture, primarily farming (corn, watermelons, and hay); ranching (cattle and hogs); dairy (milk); timber (pulpwood, lumber and turpentine) and aquaculture (fishing, oystering, and crabbing).
It is too bad the “Chiefs” did not have access to the modern self storage facilities that today’s business leaders do in Chiefland, like Kips Mini Storage & U-haul Rentals-Highway 19 (highways 27 and 98), located at 13645 NW Highway 19, north of Chiefland’s city center, at the intersection of NW 137th Street and Highway 19.
