Fort Walton Beach is a city in southern Okaloosa County, Florida, and is a principal city of the Fort Walton Beach-Crestview-Destin Metro Area. It is a year-round fishing and beach resort community. Its busiest time of the year is during the summer, (with spring break a close second) when thousands of people flock to the area nicknamed the "Emerald Coast." Piracy was rampant in the Gulf of Mexico (which is the water body Fort Walton Beach borders) from pirates working out of the Caribbean, and the Florida Keys. Contrary to popular belief, however, there is no documentary evidence that these pirates used Fort Walton Beach as their "base of operations," although, if they had, they surely could have used the area's self storage facility to store their "looted booty!"
